Costa Rica: Poas Volcano and Peace Waterfall Gardens

Time for another adventure with Sol Tropical Tours. It was our last adventure with them today. Our driver Happer and Christian obviously forgot to dance to the sun Gods as the day loomed a bit hazy and clouds surrounded the mountains. We got on the bus anyway, and motored up and away to the Cloud  Rainforest.

The drive distracted us for a bit, as it wove through another city center before climbing out and up the mountain. The road twists and curves, plunging around ravines and sweeping up past villages asleep. this is definitely a road trip that requires motion sickness tablets for any queasy stomach. Don't say in didn't warn you! I was very relieved to be able to indulge in a cup of coffee.

Coffee was required to lift the spirits as the fine misty rain splattered our faces as we got got off the bus. In fact, the Poas Volcano was shrouded in cloud, so the plan changed and we went to the peace waterfalls first. any hope of better weather was dashed on arrival. Next note is that if the guide suggests a poncho, do it! We. Lost two cameras today due to excessive moisture. The rain drenched all raincoats and clothing. We were chilled to the one by the end.

However, this is a wonderful stop. The birds are plentiful and it is a rescue center for wild animals. We saw parrots, butterflies, hummingbirds (not caged), snakes, orchids, frogs, cows, monkeys, felines and of course magnificent waterfalls. I was taken with the hummingbirds, but since zoos are abolished here, refuge centers are the best way to see the wildlife up close. I would have loved the waterfalls but I was far too wet and cold to really appreciate them, and the kids were worse. I would love to see this on a dry day. Maybe we will go back? As it was, we had to buy new clothes for the kids as they were too wet.

From here, we  optimistically went to the Poas Volcano. It was still misty raining so we strolled up and quickly viewed the hidden crater as it briefly peeped out,  before legging it back to the bus. It was rather frustrating as the day before it had been beautiful. It made me wish the tour guide had the flexibility to change the plan based on weather.

Lunch was back at our coffee stop. The open windows were chilly and the service was a it disorganized. They had missing meals etc. we did appreciate our guide asking for a fire for warmth and the hot food when it did arrive. I had tilapia for the first time and it was pretty good. So, late lunch let to a long drive home.

This was also the day that we had to work out tips. This is exceptionally daunting traveling as a family as of course, tips are expected along the way for all the extra guides. The expected tip based on their recommendations is $10 used per day per person. We did four tours (although the city tour was disappointing) so that works out to $160 minimum for a family of four. I am still stunned. This to me, while I understand it, means we really have to curtail our remaining tour plans as it was not budgeted for when we first signed up. Read the fine print.

This evening, we drove to the Multiplaza and wow, can you say Vegas? I was there to replace a camera, which the rainforest had proven to be too much for, and get groceries. No more eating out due to tips. The girls found Justice, and books and shoes and and and Costa Rica Girl and it was really tough to get out of there quickly. Also note that the roads have tolls that need to be paid in cash and you have to pay for parking. There are surprises everywhere.

Now, I am shivering in a hammock...writing a blog and thinking about more coffee. I have a new camera and well, looking forward to spending time in the countryside tomorrow.

Costa Rica: Pacific side, Crocodiles, lizards and birds.

Today's adventure started with the same alarm for the same time. You have to understand the irony of of this as I really hate mornings, especially after sleeping on rock hard beds. It could have been worse, as I might have had to provide breakfast for the minions. However, the tour guide Christian opted to have us stop for breakfast at a roadside cafe. This was very yummy. Rice and beans with eggs and coffee. Omg, how I have missed coffee. I don't have enough time in the mornings to make it myself unless I choose less sleep. THAT is not going to happen.

From San Jose, it was a short drive to Crocodile National Park, Parque Nacional de Cararas, which is located near the river full of crocodiles, Tarceles River. This place has gorgeous vegetation in a humid forest. There are tall rosewood trees with rain trees and wild cashew trees. There are lizards along the trails, and bats and flowers that eat bugs. We walked through the sweltering trees and learned a lot about wildlife. There were also lots of leaf cutter ants, that seemed to become a favorite with the smallest kiddo. It was flat and signage was in English as well as Spanish so it was easy to navigate. We walked for over an hour before heading out to the road to hop back into the van.

Five minutes down the road was the turn to the jungle boat tours. That was my favorite part as we saw 31 birds, a huge crocodile that they call Osama and more birds. They have guides that spot them for you and the traditional gift shop. There was even water and ice cream. The drive was reminiscent of Mayan massage (see si'an kaan) and being bounced out of our seat became a game of sorts.

Lunch was late today at a roadside cafe near the river. You can crocodile spot from here too. The food was reasonable and the gift shops rather fun to explore. However, it was super hot so it was back to the condos for pool time and a late supper. It is too hot to cook! Tomorrow, we are up to the volcanos and elevation. Praying for sun.

What I like best about our tours is that they are great for children, the food isn't too crazy and the length avoids traffic.

Banana Plantation

Sometimes you just need sleep, so we planned a lazy. Morning. I chose to sleep, eat breakfast and sun by the tiny pool. There were birds playing by the water, and sunshine peeking through the hazy cloud cover.  This isn't the bright sunshine of Mexico, but it warm enough and he breeze is strong.  There isn't a much better way to wake up unless I could figure out the coffee machine.

Once the crew was mobile, we opted for the Museo de Los Ninos. This is the children's museum that was created out of an old prison. We were among the first to experience their new program of tour guides. Each guide is a university student, and some are good with English too. We had Adrian, a tourism student. The girls were fascinated as we explored themes of space, Costa Rican life, banana plantations, the jungle, music, dinosaur and aviation. We had 3.5 hours there and it was nowhere near enough time to see everything. There are inter actives everywhere and lots to play with an explore. There was no time to sit and relax unless you stole it while the children were engaged in play. I have to say, we were very impressed with the staff and the exhibits. All for the price of 8400 colones...can you beat that?  It was very warm in there so I can't imagine a scorching hot day being a good idea.

Airport traffic...took us 45 minutes to do 6 km.
So, thanks to gps (seriously do not even consider driving yourself anywhere without one), I get to relax by the pool, do some laundry and think about supper plans at the resort. We have a tour booked for tomorrow, so should be fun!
